THOUSANDS of people witnessed the recent opening ceremony of UNLAD KABUHAYAN SUMMIT 2012 (UKS) which was held at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. Around 500 exhibitors and sponsors supported the event for a cause where proceeds will seed the scholarship of the upcoming trainers to make this program sustainable.

Controversies arising from the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt corn) or genetically modified (GM) corn and other related GM products brought a number of discussions in national media and cases raised against Greenpeace.

Juanito Rama, an Ilocano farmer and leader of one “going big” cooperative narrated that when they started their group way back 2006 using the GM/ Bt corn they were just 72 members and he said no one would like to believe him or them.
In the study conducted, Gonzales of SIKAP/ STRIVE INC. urged to sustain the benefits brought forth by the GM corn seed technologies and recommends the following:
An analytical data based on time from 2000 to 2011 proved that Bt corn was more efficient in the utilization of land, fertilizer, labor and pesticide resources.

The five indicators comparing ordinary hybrid maize vs. GM/ Bt corn were net farm income, pre-harvest labor savings for non-use of pesticide, incomes from seed and post harvest labor income all increased well due to higher yields.
The Bt corn was the first genetically modified crop which was approved by the Philippine Department of Agriculture way bank 2003. From the total area of 10,000 hectares planted to Bt corn in 2003, it increased the total area planted to all GM corn to 643,800 hectares with the following impacts:
