Love your enemies

Through Philippines Science Journalists Association, I came to know Mr. Henry Tacio and his regular emails to me. Once in a while we will reblog his articles in our site.

Here's one interesting article that we can reflect on...

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
by Henrylito D. Tacio

Back in the days of the American Revolution, General George Washington had a good friend who was a minister. Now, this minister had an enemy in town who did everything he could to abuse and oppose him.

After some years, this man was arrested for treason and sentenced to death. When the minister heard of this, he walked 100 kilometers to the capital to plead for the man’s life. But Washington said, “No, I cannot grant you the life of your friend.”

“My friend?” the minister exclaimed. “He is the bitterest enemy I have.” Then, he told him of what the man had done to him.

Washington was surprised. “You mean that you have walked 100 kilometers to save the life of your enemy? That puts the matter in a different perspective. I hereby grant his pardon.”

It was American president John F. Kennedy who was quoted as saying, “Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.”

If you have some enemies, you are to be congratulated, for no man ever amounted to much without arousing jealousies and creating enemies. Winston Churchill himself said, “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

Hollywood actress Bette Davis was true to herself when she said, “I do not regret one professional enemy I have made. Any actor who doesn’t dare to make an enemy should get out of the business.”

Unknowingly, your enemies are a very valuable asset as long as you refrain from striking back at them, because they keep you on the alert when you might become lazy. As one Jewish proverb puts it: “Listen to your enemy, for God is talking.”

“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” – that was what the Old Testament said (Exodus 21:24). Jesus Christ, when He came to this world, suggested otherwise. “Do not resist an evil person,” He was quoted as saying by Matthew. “If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well” (Matthew 5:39-40).

The Old Testament also said: “Hate your enemy.” Jesus contradicted this: “But I tell you: Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44).

Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate,” Thomas Jones once said. In other words, enemies are made, not born, they say. And that was what business mogul Harvey Mackay believed, too. Fortune magazine once called him “Mr. Make-Things-Happen.”

In his book, Swim with the Sharks (Without Being Eaten Alive), he wrote: “Like everyone else, I have accumulated my share of enemies in the course of a lifetime. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Forgive thy enemies is very difficult advice for many of us to follow. After all, if someone has harmed us, we tend to want to get back at them. We can carry our grudges for many, many years.”

When it comes to business, such idea is “totally counterproductive.” He shares this incident: “I once fired an employee who then went into competition with me and began using what I felt were unfair business tactics. The psychic energy and accumulated bitterness that went into my thoughts of revenge consumed me for the better part of five years.

“It was more than a waste of time, because whenever I thought about it, I grew vindictive and sour, and those attitudes spilled over into everything I touched. As a result, I lost more than did the object of my revenge.”

He summed up through these words what he learned from that past event: “If you can’t take the best advice and forgive your enemies, then take the second best and forget them. The only way you can achieve true revenge is not to let your enemies cause you to self-destruct.” Sound advice, indeed.

Even in politics, there are no actual friends and no actual enemies. Listen to the words of Ann Richards: “I’ve always said that in politics, your enemies can’t hurt you, but your friends will kill you.”

There are different types of enemies. But there are people who become our enemies because of our different beliefs or religions. In the middle of the fighting in Lebanon, a Christian seminarian was captured by a Druze Muslim. He ordered the captive down a mountain path, where he was to be shot.

This particular seminarian had had military training, and was able to surprise his captor and disarm him. Now the table was turned: it was the Druze who was ordered down the path.

As they walked along, however, the seminarian recalled the words of Jesus, “Love your enemy. Do good to those that hate you.”

He could go no farther. He threw the rifle into the bushes, told the Druze he could go – and started walking back up the hill.

Minutes later, he heard the Druze coming up behind him. “Is this the end, after all?” he thought. Perhaps the Druze was going to shoot him in the back. But he never turned around; he kept walking straight ahead, until the enemy reached him. Right there and then, the Druze grabbed him, hugged him, and thanked him for sparing his life.

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive,” Martin Luther King, Jr. pointed out. “He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”

How to be happy and how to enjoy life ...

In these times when all we hear are negative news and economic turbulence, we need something that will balance our life. Not because we wanted to escape life but because we need to feed our mind, body and spirit with positive views, something exciting, interesting and happy moments and vibes!
Bernadette Yari-Tuazon

Just recently, our high school classmate came from Houston, Texas, USA. She’s the “katipunera” of our section, no other than Bernadette Yari-Tuazon. Our former classmates and I gathered and we are so overjoyed with her presence. Having fun together and reminiscing jolly old days are truly sweet and good for our souls I guess ;) Just what we did at Jemaflor Ville, Pansol, Laguna; Margie de Guzman-dela Cruz mansion, Bacoor, Cavite; Juliet Usman-Gutierrez and Divina David's homes in Binan, Laguna...perfect mini-reunions...

As we journey in this world, we have different trials, challenges, but here’s an inspiring message from Singaporean Adam Khoo:

As many of us are feeling the repercussions of one of the worst recessions in recent history, I would like to share with you my philosophy on the EQUATION OF LIFE. If you studied Math, Chemistry, Economics, Accounts or any one of these mathematical topics before, you would understand that equations have to balance.

For every good, there must be bad. For every positive, there must first be negative. For light to exist there must first be darkness. For every market boom, there must first be a crash. For you to experience happiness, you must first experience sadness. For you to experience pride and inspiration, you must first have experienced disappointment and adversity. The greater the initial failure and disappointment, the sweeter will be the pride of success.”

It is so timely that when I opened my email, Henrylito Tacio shared his article about “IN PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.” With the insights imparted below, we could find light and hope in our lives…

As an entrepreneur, best-selling author and peak performance trainer, Singaporean Adam Khoo has traveled to various parts of Asia. On a plane to Kuala Lumpur recently, someone came to him and with a shocked look inquired, “How come a millionaire like you is traveling economy?”

Without much ado, he replied, “That’s why I am a millionaire.”

His answer baffled the man – along with others who have read his Secrets of Self-Made Millionaire. Oftentimes, they wondered, “What’s the point in making so much money if you don’t enjoy it?”

In his blog, Khoo posted this timely thought: “The thing is that I don’t really find happiness in buying branded clothes, jewelries or sitting first class. Even if buying something makes me happy it is only for a while, it does not last. Material happiness never last, it just give you a quick fix.”

When it comes to materials things, happiness is elusive. In fact, a study done in the United States showed that happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. The result, which appeared in Psychological Science, found that people can grow accustomed to their possessions and thereby derive less happiness from them.

The researchers claim that people can continue to want the things they have and that those who do so can achieve greater happiness. “Simply having a bunch of things is not the key to happiness,” said Texas Tech University psychologist Jeff Larsen, who headed the study. “Our data show that you also need to appreciate those things you have. It’s also important to keep your desire for things you don’t own in check.”

Filipinos are among the happiest Asians in the 95 countries listed in the World Happiness Index. The Philippines was listed No. 12 while Japan was No. 19. Bangladesh ranked No. 21 with China and India in the spots of No. 29 and No. 36, respectively.

In the first ever “world map of happiness” produced by Adrian White, an analytic social psychologist at the University of Leicester’s School of Psychology, three Asian countries made it to the first top 20: Bhutan, No. 8; Brunei, No. 9; and Malaysia, No. 17.

Who doesn’t know Abraham Lincoln, one of the most beloved American presidents? At one time, he said, “Most people are about as happy as they choose to be.” I couldn’t agree with him more. He should know. He went through much anguish in his life – the death of his fiancĂ©e, lost elections, the Civil War, and other major disappointments. But he chose to be happy and obtained inner joy and peace in those last years before he was assassinated.

In a recent survey I conducted, family, health, and religion are the top three most important things that make Asians happy. This is particularly true in the Philippines, according to a study conducted by the National Statistical Coordination Board. The study showed that Filipinos ranked family as the most important source of happiness, giving it a score of 9.45 on a scale of 1 to 10. Health came next, with a score of 8.95, while religion ranked third with 8.59.

Clarence C. Martinez works in a ship building company about 60 kilometers away from his home in Cebu City. “I go home only on weekends or on Wednesday evening,” says the Filipino executive. “So after a long work at the office, I drive almost two hours and honk the horn of my car to announce my arrival and also as a signal to open the driveway. You can just imagine my happiness when I see my son coming out and hugging me.”

Some Asians find inner joy from their works. “Examining newborn babies” is a dose of happiness for Professor Zulkifli Ismail. “Babies are so lovable and I am grateful that my job actually lets me look at and cuddle them everyday,” says the pediatrician at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.

His work also tops the list of Dr Gerard Chuah, a senior consultant eye surgeon at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. “Being able to save someone’s eyesight and allow them to lead a normal life – that gives me a sense of fulfillment and lets me feel my existence on this planet.”

People become happier with age, according to findings from a three-decade-long survey conducted in the United States. “With age comes happiness,” wrote University of Chicago sociologist Yang Yang, who wrote report published in the American Sociological Review.

When asked what makes her happy the most, Dr Emmanuela L. Gutierrez said that being 70 years old, healthy and with her senses still intact. “I can still read and comprehend, see the beauty of nature, hear well, smell the aroma of foods and flowers and plants, and can talk and feel,” explained the Filipino physician who now lives in the United States.

Really, happiness is a matter of choice. An ancient proverb suggests: “Dance as if no one were watching, sing as if no one were listening, and live each day as if there were no tomorrow.” And remember, “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence,” reminds philosopher Aristotle.

(Here’s a video of dancing, singing and full of laughter: Remix of I'm So Excited!:)

Who doesn’t want to be happy anyway? In these days of financial woes, crass materialism, information highway, and high technologies, it seems too hard to find happiness anymore. But there are simple things that can make you happy. Consider these 10 strategies shared to me by my friend, Dr. Willie T. Ong:

1. Decide to be happy. Make a plan. Think of ways and things that bring you happiness. Set happy goals not just for yourself but include others, too. Then, think of what to do next. Life is what we make it.
Juliet Zapanta-Cruz & Bennette C Yari-Tuazon

2. Use your talents. Identify your strengths. Can you sing, dance, draw, paint, write, or speak? Find and cultivate these strengths. Focus on them and they will bring you confidence and satisfaction. Do what you were meant to do in this world.

3. Do something enjoyable. If you’re married, play with your kids. Have fun with friends like watching movies together or singing in karaoke bars. Take time to relax and play. There’s nothing wrong with having fun and liking your work. Go through your normal day in an easy and light manner.

4. Be curious. Try to see happiness around you. Watch the sunrise, feel the cool breeze, listen to the birds chirping, smell the newly-bloomed flowers, touch the raindrops, and see people smiling. Nature is full of happiness.

5. Count your blessings. Be grateful and happy with what you have. Accept the blessings that you have and think positively on the things you do not have. One sage man told me once: “Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again.”

6. Like yourself. Everybody commits a mistake at some point in their lives. It’s part of our learning process, whether it’s because of our youth or ignorance. Try to make amends on the mistakes you made and then let it go. It’s the things we didn’t do that we later regret and not the things and mistakes that we did.

7. Pamper yourself. After a long work day, treat yourself to a warm refreshing bath. Enjoy your favorite magazine. Tinker around your hobbies. And when you feel like a kid, bring out the child in you.

Bennette, Jennette, Lorenz, Juliet & Pastor Minie

8. Enjoy close relationships. A unique study shows that talking to a supportive friend is as effective as taking a tablet of pain reliever. There is something heavenly in true and caring friends. Invest your time in building close relationships. They are as good as money in the bank.

(Julius, Tetchie, Pastor Minie, Edith, Margie, Divine, Bennette, Jennette, Juliet)

9. Find positive people. Surround yourself with positive and happy people. Find good mentors. They can be the keys to your success. Some believe the other person’s good influence and good karma will also bring you luck. Happy people also tend to be more supportive of others, too.

10. Volunteer to help someone in need. If you want to receive US$40 worth of happiness, donate US$40 to your favorite charity. Studies show that the more people give to others, the happier they become.

So, what makes you happy? Singaporean millionaire Khoo again shared this thought: “Happiness must come from doing your life’s work (be in teaching, building homes, designing, trading, winning tournaments etc.) and the money that comes is only a by- product. If you hate what you are doing and rely on the money you earn to make you happy by buying stuff, then I think that you are living a meaningless life.”

In a nut shell, it’s a better option to be happy and to let go of the negative people and happenings. Life is short and time is fleeting they say, so enjoy our lives to the fullest! :)

I would like to post and open a conversation among readers of this blog around the world with this question: What will make you happy?

Here are my top 15 happy builders:

1) thanking God for all the blessings given to me and my family, a close encounter with Him is my happiest moment
2) building a happy family relationship and giving them the best of everything we have (in-progress...:)
3) building relationships, renewing friendships such as getting together with old friends and classmates chatting, dancing, singing and laughing out loud!

Travel Awesome Philippines: Explore and Experience Subic!

Subic Bay Freeport Zone: A Haven for Nature’s Wonders

and Business Opportunities (Click me to see the YouTube video)

by Jojo M. Ocampo

BEHOLD! THE VAST splendor of Subic Bay has once again beckoned to members of Metro Manila’s media.

Awesome Subic

Reminiscing Subic's travel experience, we joined representatives from various print and broadcast media groups in responding warmly to an invitation from Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Administrator Armand Arreza. Like a brat pack of eager school kids, we flocked to join the Subic Bay Media Tour with the theme “Savoring Subic’s Surprises.”

Camayan Beach Resort

Organized by M-Vision Business Solutions, the tour seeks to give media participants an ocular inquest into the Zone’s business and natural tourist spots, and a life-transforming “Personal Effectiveness Workshop” called “Confluent Learning.”

The Subic Bay Freeport (SBF) Zone lies at the heart of the fertile Central Luzon plains, a two-and-a-half hour drive north of Manila. Picturesque and serene, it teems with lush flora and fauna found only in its abundant forests, and its blue bay waters bountiful with rich exotic marine life.

The SBF is an economic hub that supplies products and services for Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan, and Zambales.

Enter the Freeport Zone

Upon arrival, the visiting journalists were welcomed by the energetic SBMA officers and staff: composed of Mr. Venancio Triguero; PR Consultant Knette Fernando, Manager Armi Llamas, Supervisor Carlo Andres and staffers Gigs Estellita, Marlyn Gloria and Gemma Ragadio.

After a brief rest, we media workers convened for the opening workshop themed “Unleash Your Maximum Potentials through Confluent Learning”.

SBMA Chairman Commodore Feliciano G. Salonga at the center

Facilitated by Trainer Edgar Teovisio, the workshop taught us how to “make our essential faculties flow, unleashing the powers within us to create and accomplish better personal and career lives.”

A practicing psychologist, Teovisio is a member of the England-based Society for Effective Affective Learning (SEAL).

Right after the workshop, a press conference was held, led by SBMA Chairman Commodore Feliciano G. Salonga.

SBMA Chairman Commodore Feliciano G. Salonga

Salonga revealed SBMA’s ongoing plans under his tutelage and that of Administrator Arreza. Salonga, a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy (New York), has served as top executive at two shipyards in Subic and Bataan. Meanwhile, Arreza has served as COO, director and consultant for several firms and later at the SBMA board. He has also an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

SBMA: Business Haven

A group of Chinese businessmen who visited the Philippines said the “Subic Bay Freeport is now being regarded as a big piece of cake" due to its strategic location in the Asian region.”
According to Arreza, the Chinese businessmen from Jilin Province regard the Freeport as an ideal place to open an investment hub in the region.

"Because of Subic’s strategic location, Chinese officials will be visiting the Subic Freeport to discuss with us plans of Chinese business groups to put up investments in Subic," Arreza said.

Salonga said that the good news signifies the continuing confidence of the international business community in the government and that the economy of the Philippines is on the right track.

Jungle Life at Zoobic Safari

The next day, after celebrating a night of revelry and fun at the villas at Binigtican, we geared up for the Zoobic Safari, the 25-hectare wildlife sanctuary that offers encounters with the creatures of the African wilds and the Savannah.

Riding Safari jeeps (enclosed with bars), we were doubly thrilled by Siberian and Bengal tigers which devoured dead chickens (being dangled right beside the jeeps by tour guides).

Iguana

deers

We also enjoyed adventures at the Petting Zoo (a 20-minute walk-through tropical jungle filled with deer, ostrich, eagles and monkeys), Rodent World (a collection of rats, mice and Guinea Pigs), and Serpentarium (a close view of live snakes, lizards, and iguanas inside glass cages).

Metro Media with Zoobic Safari's reprsentative

An Ocean Adventure

At Ilanin Bay, we finally arrived at Ocean Adventure, Southeast Asia’s first open-water marine park.

CEO John Corcoran, Ocean Adventure

In his address, CEO John Corcoran said Ocean Adventure “seeks to increase awareness on the need to save marine ecosystems, and to improve the quality of life of the surrounding communities.”

At the Nautilus Theater, we saw the South American Sea Lion Marine Patrol up close and realized what agile, intelligent, and friendly animals they are.

The Sea Lions taught us the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and other ideas on how to save our environment.

At the air-conditioned Ocean Discovery Aquarium, we were astonished to see fish and other sea creatures in a variety of marine life habitats – from fresh water streams, mangrove forests, wharf pile, sea grasses, coral reefs to the dark recesses of rock crevices and caves.

El Capitan Stadium

Next, we went to the El Capitan Stadium, where we saw the Whale Presentation. We were awed by dolphins, sea lions and killer whales in their lovely lagoon home.

We saw their amazing acrobatic ability grace, agility and intelligence, as they leaped high into the air, performing bows and spins.
After having an early dinner and some Duty Free shopping, we took the coaster ride back home to Manila.
We’ve been to Subic lots of times before but never were they as fun and exciting as this tour. Indeed, two days at Subic are certainly not enough.

Thank You!

We acknowledged the following: SBMA Administrator Armand Arreza, SBMA Chairman Commodore Feliciano G. Salonga, PR team of SBMA, Team/Tourism Council of SBMA, Aristocrat, MM Media, management & staff of Ocean Adventure, Camayan Beach Resort & Zoobic Safari, Golden Dragon Restaurant, Fiorgelato, Moondish, Kiss King of Balls, PFIZER, and all the resto bars, restaurants, tourist spots in SBMA. VCO in capsules more effective than its liquid form

By Rudy Milay, Jojo M. Ocampo & Juliet Z. Cruz

The month of December could be the most festive month when numerous offers of sumptuous dinner more often are fatty foods that sometimes cannot be ignored.

Your worries can now be minimized by bringing virgin coconut oil (VCO) in capsules form inside your bag or wallet.

Know the good news about the encapsulated VCO:

“The encapsulated version of the highly acclaimed VCO is more effective than its liquid version,” said general surgeon Dr. Ed Lalusis, medical director and CEO of Growrich Manufacturing Inc.

According to the latest studies on VCO products, the sales of coconut oil in capsule form registered a significant increase than its bottled VCO counterparts.

Describing VCO as the "miracle oil," Lalusis said the VCO is considered the healthiest dietary oil on earth and has earned a good following among overseas Filipinos and foreigners in different countries all over the world.

He said that overseas workers before encountered problems in bringing VCO in cold climate countries and drinking it there.

"Those working in countries with cold climates usually get frustrated when the VCO liquid freezes or hardens," said Dr. Lalusis. "But OFWs who take with them the capsulated VCO product do away with these storage problems."

Another reason for encapsulating VCO is the growing concern of doctors on the oxidation that VCO liquid goes through once it is exposed to air.

"Reports of the liquid VCO turning rancid a few days after its bottle or container is opened are becoming a frequent complaint," said Lalusis.

According to Lalusis, 500mg Growrich VCO capsule was conceptualized to serve those who believe in the benefits of VCO but find difficulty in drinking its liquid form.

"People will love VCO products more when they take it in capsule form," Lalusis said.

More benefits of VCO in capsule elucidated

Recent studies have revealed that VCO is effective for indigestion, asthma, diarrhea, diabetes, sepsis (blood poisoning) in infants and even HIV. In addition, studies have shown that VCO have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties to fight against diseases.

VCO in capsule generates the highest energy our body needs among the rest of fruit-based food supplements in the world. In a clinical study conducted on diabetic persons, after taking two VCO in capsule for a number of days, the clinical observation was that they have low cholesterol reading and normal SGPT (serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase). Persons suffering from diabetes should take two VCO’s in capsule everyday to substitute for sugar as the source of body energy.

"In capsule form, the VCO may freeze or harden, especially in colder climates. But once taken in, the body's natural heat will again turn it into liquid form where it will be broken down and absorbed and processed by the body," said Lalusis' wife, Purisima, one of the country's foremost chemists who develop the VCO in capsule form.

The pediatricians from the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital concluded that VCO in capsule is anti-bacterial as result of a study conducted among infants. Babies given a daily doze of 500mg VCO in capsule reported no incident of sepsis.

VCO in capsule also relieves persons suffering from constipation and cleans the intestine from toxins. It was also found as a good substitute for mineral oil which is found in animal fats and not good for our body unlike VCO which is medium-chain saturated fatty acids. It thus prevents myocardial infarction or heart attack as the cholesterol build up is minimized.

Persons suffering from peptic ulcer were found to experience no gastric pain after taking two VCO in capsule daily. Hemorrhoid affected persons reported of no rectal bleeding as the VCO in capsule served as a laxative and eased their bowel movement.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients indicated relief after taking two VCO capsule daily and noted no steroidal effect on their body. Besides the phlegm their body produces is white and not yellowish in color.

These and more are the good effects of VCO in our body. It is best taken in two capsules a day to prevent overdose of body oil intake. The human only needs so much dosageof oil to prevent ill effects. Besides VCO in capsule, like Growrich, is manufactured in cold process thus maintaining the natural freshness of coconut oil and since it has no human intervention it is very safe to conclude that no rancidity takes effect. Coconut oil may become rancid once it is exposed to air and will do more harm than good to the human body. In fact, many clinicians who found the good effects of Growrich VCO in capsule, has prescribed it not only as a food supplement but as a medicine.

“Our capsule's potency and concentration is different from the liquid form of other brands," Lalusis added.

Purisima explained:"The capsule is a huge improvement from the bottled one. The dosage is more controlled and its quality is maintained. It minimizes the after taste that comes when taking the liquid VCO."
