The modern style of the Innovation Park in the 2019 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) conveys a positive outlook of a brighter future of the Philippines, held at World Trade Center, Pasay City.  NSTW will run from July 17 to 21.

DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña said in his message that the NSTW celebration "has the noble intention of harnessing the power of innovative technological ideas and concepts to power the Philippines toward new, boundless opportunities to solve longstanding societal problems."

The celebration showed  us a glimpse of a progressive Philippines through science and technology.

The technologies on display address three of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely affordable and clean energy; industry, innovation and infrastructure; and responsible consumption and production.

Through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993, the NSTW is celebrated every third week of July to highlight the significant contributions of S&T to national development.

The Department of Science and Technology funded researches on renewable energy, infrastructure, and technologies that can provide clean and more efficient energy.

The technologies at the booth for the SDG on industry, innovation and infrastructure are designed to contribute to the improvement, resiliency, and sustainability of transport, irrigation, energy, and Information and Communication Technology in the country.

Showcasing here are USHER or the Universal Structural Health Evaluation and Recording System, Project DIME which monitors big infrastructure projects such as irrigation networks and others.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AT 2019 NSTW

The booth on SDG on responsible consumption and production basically educates and leads consumers to choose a lifestyle that highlights sustainable consumption, management, and efficient use of natural resources. Some of the technolgies on display reduce food losses in production and food waste, and manage chemicals in an environment-friendly way. Technologies in this booth include Nanocomposite for Water Purification, Bio-Oil Production from Agricultural Waste, Abaca fiber-reinforced Composite (for boat application), and others.

More new technologies will be on highlight during the celebration of the 2019 NSTW.

This year's theme "Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development” underscores the role of science and technology in achieving the country's commitment to the UN SDGs.

The SDGs serve as blueprint in achieving a better and more sustainable future for all nations. SDGs address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The SDGs are interrelated and are aimed to be achieved by year 2030.

Exhibits, fora and other activities in this year's NSTW focuses on local science community's efforts and initiatives to address the SDGs.

Science is Fun at NSTW 2019

The booth of JICA catched our attention with all their creativity to take a photo wearing the Japanese Kimono.  That was fun but no chance to do it as more and more people would like to have that Japan experience.

"Gohan," is the Japanese for rice and this staple food according to Maan Bakisan of JICA Philippines is good for people who are undergoing dialysis.  She showed also one way of support for PAGASA in Information and Education Campaign like the "Everyday Safety Guide for Earthquake and Tsunami."

Chill in Concert at NSTW

DOST employees are musicians too.  We felt the live musical show with dance, melody of Pinoy music at this event.

Syncing the lyrics, meaning, blending of voice through this OPM or Filipino music was a new thing, relaxing and good for the mind and body after the whole day of work and gargantuan of information.

Admission is free and exhibits are open to the public from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
