CHEF entrepreneur Jessie dela Cruz, a former overseas Filipino, the strategist behind Sushi Moshi restaurant, inspired and entertained me while driving as I listened to their light conversation about Japanese food and all the food he usually cook with the host Belle Surara on a Sunday noontime radio program “Eat Konnect Na” (12:00 noon to 1:00 pm) of Radyo Agila DZEC 1062 Khz, Eagle Broadcasting Corporation.

Jessie relayed that during his young age to this time, eating food and cooking were both his passion and his way of living. He's fond of trying something, concocting ingredients to create with the dishes he liked.

Jessie’s inspirations to start a Japanese restaurant came to fruition from working hard with two jobs - one in the morning and one in the evening when he was in Nagoya, Japan way back 1992 to 1998. He delivered different ingredients to stores in the morning and an all-around one-man operation in a Japanese club in the evening. It made him know how the ins and outs of the process of a Japanese food and entertainment establishment. He was mentored by his former boss in Japan.

With all these wealth of experience, he came back rising and now opened this Sushi Moshi last November 2017. At first, they just wanted to open a small sushi store but found a better space that provided them to generate a dine-in and take-out of several Japanese dishes with a wide variety of sushi rolls, from starter, ala carte, nigiri, ramen, donburi and sashimi among others.

Grateful to Chuchi Estanislao, a friend and a financial advisor who connected me to the owners to taste and review the food they offer.

A customer choosing what to eat in a wide array of Japanese food choices in SUSHI MOSHI, Wilcon City Center
The brand name Sushi Moshi according to Jessie was derived from “sushi” and “moshi moshi.” Sushi is known as a Japanese dish of specially prepared rice with small amount of vinegar, with sugar and salt, combined with a variety of ingredients, such as seafood, vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits; while Moshi from “moshi moshi” in Japanese in answering the phone, which means “hey dude or hello”.

During our conversation with the chef, they have created new dishes like Tantan men and improved the menu to suit the customers’ taste. They develop their offerings quickly and instill new ideas and dishes to delight their customers.

Restaurant Review

POSITIVE AMBIANCE IN SUSHI MOSHI - Having good vibes in this new Japanese restaurant in Wilcon City Center, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City, Philippines.  In photo are Belle Surara, Joey Morales, Juliet Z. Cruz, Mrs. dela Cruz and Chuchi Estanislao.

Ambiance – 5 stars

SUSHI MOSHI MURAL designed by their artist

The visuals from murals to marketing collateral, the smile of the service personnel and the total package of the Sushi Moshi store brought us the atmosphere of happiness, youthfulness, prosperity, positive mood, creativity, synergy and dynamism.

The color combination of mint green of the chairs and the light orange accents of accessories and the paintings on the wall, the look, the style of the signage and the total image and branding of the restaurant imbibes to attract a wide array of customers including kids, families and even senior citizens.

SUSHI MOSHI MURALS or paintings on walls are light orange and mint green combination and "kawaii" inspired.
Sushi Moshi’s interior design has a unique appeal, a modern Japanese marvel that tells a story of an entrepreneur.

It is fun, colorful and “kawaii.” The latter in Japanese means lovable, cute, or adorable and pretty inviting for the young ones and so the culture of cuteness in Japan.

SUSHI MOSHI'S TANTAN MEN, oozing with exquisite and authentic Japanese ramen flavors

We tried the following and savored the food with gusto and satisfaction!

Tantan men (Php 219) - 5 stars

New delicious steamy ramen (noodles) in a big bowl, with nori seaweeds sheet on top, served hot and extra spicy with the right blend of sweetness and yet so affordable. Oh, the flavors explode inside my mouth. I love it so much and this completed my day!

SUSHI MOSHI'S CHICKEN TERIYAKI

This dish took a little longer time to serve. It was grilled with the smoky flavor. The chicken meat was so tender and deboned. The marinated sauce was mouthwatering and I approved this dish in my opinion to become one of the best sellers! Japanese rice was used in all their rice toppings (donburi), so sticky. Another yummy favorite dish!

Katsudon (Php 149) – 5 stars

From SUSHI MOSHI's Facebook @SushiMoshiPh showed several awesome photo sample selections of sushi, rice meal and salad to ease away that cravings!

The serving of Katsudon was so generous and definitely superb in taste! Excellent 5 stars rating from Chuchi Estanislao and his son Jeff who got the chance to taste the “pasalubong” of her mom was astounded with the taste!  He said, Sushi Moshi's Katsudon is better than the normal Japanese food franchise he had tasted!
