Math wizards vie to Colombia for 54th IMO

PHILIPPINES’ math winners confirmed to participate in the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad. The team is set to battle with the best of the world on July 18-28 in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Thumbs Up Philippines! The Math wizards with high spirit are set to represent Philippines in the 54th International Mathematical Olympiad on July 18-28, 2013 in Santa Marta, Colombia. This is jointly organized by DOST-SEI and MSP.
This prestigious mathematical competition in the world is represented by this year’s Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO) winners and finalists from St. Jude Catholic School’s Adrian Reginald Sy, Mikaela Angelina Uy, and Ma. Czarina Angela Lao; MGC New Life Christian Academy’s Farrell Eldrian Wu, and Grace Christian College’s Deany Hendrick Cheng who have their eyes set towards winning the country’s first-ever gold medal.

Uy and Wu finished as First Runner-up, and Second Runner-up, respectively, in the 15th PMO held earlier this year while Sy, Lao and Cheng served as finalists. The team will be guided by Team Leader Dr. Jose Ernie Lope and Deputy Team Leader Joseph Ray Clarence Damasco, both from Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP).

The government, private, and academic sectors gathered last 13 July to boost the team’s spirit in time for their departure on 19 July for the competition.

Engr. Ma. Teresa de Guzman, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), congratulated the students for having the chance to represent the country in the biggest mathematics competition in the world.

“Each year, we feel like we’re getting closer towards netting our first gold medal and I can say the same for our national team this year,” she said. “I am very optimistic that we will have another good showing and hopefully we can finally get that gold,” she said in a press statement.

The Philippines has been consistent in bringing home at least the bronze medal since 2008, and have successfully took home a silver medal in 2010 courtesy of Carmela Lao also from St. Jude Catholic School.

De Guzman expressed joy over the team’s good mix of up-and-comers in Sy, Wu, Lao and Cheng, and an IMO veteran in the name of Uy who won a bronze medal last year. She encouraged them their representation in the IMO is an achievement on its own and proves that Filipinos can indeed compete in any stage and against any nationality.

“We know we can win and our time will surely come, hopefully, it will be now,” added de Guzman while noting that DOST-SEI will continue supporting the endeavors of MSP.

“We at the Science Education Institute promises to continue our support to the Mathematical Society of the Philippines in their untiring effort of bringing out the best in mathematics among our children,” disclosed de Guzman.

The DOST-SEI and MSP jointly organized the training and sending-off of the Philippine team to the IMO. Other sponsoring entities include the University of the Philippines’ Institute of Mathematics, Metrobank Foundation, and the Mathematics Teachers Association.
